BME Carers Support Group & Carers Week

Supporting BME Carers Across Northern Ireland

A regional group has been working to identify and support carers from ethnic minority backgrounds.  Its membership includes Carer Co-ordinators from the five Health & Social Care Trusts and Carers Northern Ireland.  The key aims of the group have been:

  • To promote a co-ordinated approach, to address BME carer health and social wellbeing issues;
  • To raise the profile of the issues affecting BME Carers in NI;
  • To identify ways of reaching out to BME Carers;
  • Develop initiatives to support BME Carers and supply relevant information locally;
  • Promote good practice working with BME Carers;
  • Encourage agencies working with the minority ethnic population to consider BME Carers;

Over the past number of years the group has developed carer support information in ten different languages http://www.publichealth.hscni.net/publications/do-you-look-after-someone-and-are-you-black-or-minority-ethnic-background-english-and-t

In 2016 it also carried out an initial scoping exercise to identify the number of BME Carers known across Northern Ireland.  For a copy of the report please use contact details below.

The group would now like to extend its membership particularly with organisations who work with ethnic minorities.  The group meets every two months in venues across Northern Ireland.  If you are currently working with ethnic minorities and would like to be involved in our work please email Margaret McDonald at margaret.mcdonald@belfasttrust.hscni.net with your contact details or ring 95046702.

Carers Week 2017 – 12th – 18th June

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.
