The Gathering Place

This project will connect diverse communities across Northern Ireland who share a love of creativity through an innovative programme of making, collaborating, constructing and discussing. The Gathering Place will be a sculptural installation around which outreach activities and creative gatherings will take place. Participants will be offered opportunities to literally form the walls of this space from their own personal creative practices. Participants, will create a panel using their medium of choice which reflects their own personal creativity. A professional artist will be commissioned to design and build a ‘Gathering Place’ structure which will incorporate these individual panels together to form the outer surface of the installation. These outreach workshops will be offered to established community and voluntary arts groups across Northern Ireland. We will also have a series of five public workshop sessions will be offered on a pop-up basis for individuals not affiliated with groups.

Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in the story-telling aspect of the project which will form digital media content for inside the structure. Voluntary Arts Ireland will work with participants to create a video blog about their own creative practice – inspiration, techniques, medium of choice. The aim of these blogs will be to raise awareness about the myriad reasons that people create and promote the subsequent wellbeing benefits that can be achieved by engaging with your own creativity. The installation will initially be exhibited at ArtsEkta’s Belfast Mela Festival in Botanic Gardens and we plan for it to be toured to two other regional venues across Northern Ireland. If you would like more information on getting involved in the project please contact aoife@artsekta.org.uk
