New Adult Step 2 Substance Misuse & Family Support Service

Following on from the recent closure of the FASA Adult Step 2 Substance Misuse Service in the Northern area, the new Adult Step 2 Substance Misuse & Family Support Service will now be delivered by Extern across the Northern locality.


The Extern Adult Substance Misuse Service is available within the Northern Trust, supporting adults and their families impacted by substance misuse.

The service will be outreach and offered throughout the entire Northern Trust area.

Who can access this service?

This service is designed for adults (18+) who are impacted by harmful/hazardous patterns of substance use, trained staff will help to support individuals to achieve agreed goals in relation to substance use with the aim of reducing/abstaining from substances.

The service can also provide support and signposting in relation to other areas impacted by substance misuse, including physical and psychological health, criminal involvement and social functioning.

The facilitators can also provide advice and support on accessing services for individuals presenting with a physical dependence on substances.

In addition to this, they provide support to family members impacted by an individual’s substance use – this is a brief intervention service, offering up to five support sessions.

These support sessions will focus on psycho-education, signposting, advice and solution focused support.
