The Cliff Edge NI Coalition is a group of over 70 organisations (including NICVA) in Northern Ireland who have joined together to express concern about the upcoming end of the current welfare reform mitigations package. These mitigations protect people from the harshest elements of welfare reform including the bedroom tax and the benefit cap. The end of these mitigations could mean thousands of vulnerable people across Northern Ireland would face a substantial drop in income and even eviction from their homes.
The Coalition has two key campaign messages:
- The protection in place to support people impacted by welfare reform through mitigations is due to end in March 2020.
- It is important that people impacted by welfare reform in NI continue to be able to access support beyond March 2020. This support should take account of the new challenges people are facing, particularly Universal Credit.
