- Autism & Mental Health Short Film
It is no secret that here in Northern Ireland our children and young people have the highest rates of mental health difficulties in the whole of the UK. For our neurodiverse young people and adults these statistics are even harder to read.
84% of Autistic individuals meet full criteria for Anxiety disorder
Autistic individuals are unfortunately 9 times more likely to die by suicide
77% of young autistic adults had additional mental health diagnoses, including anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder
Where does this leave us? We are in a mental health crisis here in Northern Ireland for our children and young people. For our neurodiverse young people we have hit the depths of crisis. I believe you have two options when crisis comes. You can camp out in crisis or you can create in crisis. This year, let it be the year that we change in how we approach supporting our young people with their mental health, that we create a world that is accepting and loving for our neurodiverse individuals. It only takes one. One person, one conversation to change the whole trajectory of someone’s life. Be the one person for someone. The one person in that school, in the workplace, in your community, in your home, in your youth club. It is time for change.
