Dear Stronger Together members,

I am writing to invite you to our conference ‘EU citizens – Rights and Wrongs’ at Stormont, the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The event will focus on voting rights in the upcoming European Parliament Elections.

New Europeans UK board member Eileen Chan-Hu, who is hosting the conference, and former Deputy Speaker at the Northern Ireland Assembly, Jane Morrice, who is chairing the event, would be delighted to see you there.

As we get closer to the June elections, we are keen to raise awareness among EU citizens in Northern Ireland about their right to vote. However, following Brexit, over half a million people in Northern Ireland holding Irish citizenship are excluded from voting. EU Citizens from several other EU member states, resident in Northern Ireland, will be similarly affected due to divergent national rules about retaining and/or exercising their right to vote from abroad. If you would like to find out more about EU citizens who are being denied their European Parliament voting rights, then come join us.

Where and When?

The Long Gallery Stormont on Friday 24th May from 9:30am to 2pm

The event will also feature a panel discussion chaired by Jane Morrice, former BBC Journalist and former Head of the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland, on the wider challenges facing EU citizens in Northern Ireland.

The event will include:

  • Welcome by MLA Kate Nicholl
  • Speeches on citizens’ rights – with focus on voting rights and disenfranchisement of EU citizens
  • Tea and coffee break
  • Panel discussion chaired by Jane Morrice
  • Lunch & networking with musical performances by EU Supergirl Madeleina Kay

THE FULL PROGRAMME: NEUK 24 May EU Citizens Rights and Wrongs Programme

The conference is organised by the citizens’ rights charity New Europeans UK with the help of our board member Eileen Chan-Hu, who is also the CEO of CRAICNI in Northern Ireland, delivering diversity and inclusion training, along with Jane Morrice, who helped architect the Good Friday Agreement as a former MLA of Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition.

The event is the first of a two-part series with the second part on immigration status (EUSS) planned for later this year.

We hope to see you there and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
